The Lap of Windermere holds a special place in my heart as one of my favourite trail races, weaving its way through the picturesque Lake District. This scenic route encompasses beautiful flowing trails, punctuated by a few notable climbs, including the challenging ascents of Loughrigg and Wansfell.

On a splendid day representing DYNAFIT UK, I joined a vibrant assembly of fellow ultra runners, forming a formidable gathering of over 800 participants. The nature of the event lent itself to a convivial atmosphere, with many runners choosing to camp, creating a delightful buzz over the weekend. Our campsite offered stunning views of the majestic Lake Windermere.

The route itself predominantly meandered along singletrack and unmanicured trails, occasionally incorporating sections of boardwalk, fire roads, steeper fell paths, and brief stretches of quiet country roads. This low-level course served as an ideal introduction to off-road distance running, with the added advantage of being able to proceed regardless of the weather.

Another aspect that made the Lap of Windermere even more special was the presence of several fellow Belper Harriers who had joined the event. Witnessing the growing enthusiasm for ultras within my club, just outside the stunning Peak District, was truly heartwarming. It's a testament to the ever-expanding allure of these challenging races, and sharing this experience with my clubmates added an extra layer of camaraderie and shared accomplishment to an already remarkable event.

For the second consecutive year, I found myself standing on the podium, securing a commendable fourth place finish. However, my quest for second place took an unfortunate turn during the final 5 miles when my fatigued legs began to falter. Nonetheless, the race concluded with a memorable prize - a substantial finisher's medal crafted from a sizeable chunk of wood.

This event is not only a wonderful experience but also a fantastic stepping stone for those venturing into longer ultras. The course is meticulously waymarked, bolstered by a dedicated team of marshals, and features well-stocked checkpoints. One notable highlight was the inclusion of pizza at the halfway mark, although I must admit I didn't partake in such indulgences, as I was fully immersed in race mode, striving to minimize any unnecessary stoppage times.
